John Weeks' connection to his hometown was profound. As a high school student at the age of 17, he was recruited to referee Junior High School basketball games. This sparked a passion that would last the rest of his life. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1971, then attended Howard College and Abilene Christian University. After college, John returned to Big Spring, where he played an instrumental role in the family business, Gibbs & Weeks Men's Clothing Store. It was during this time that his profound love for community and sports began to shine.

One of John's earliest contributions was the establishment of Johnny Stone Park, a softball park that became a gathering place for Big Spring's residents. His dedication to providing a space for sports and community engagement set the foundation for his future endeavors.

John's voice echoed through the airwaves as he passionately broadcasted Big Spring Steer Football for an incredible 51 years, ensuring that the local community remained connected and inspired.

John's influence extended beyond local sports. With KBYG radio station under his ownership, he not only continued his dedication to community broadcasting but also leveraged his passion for baseball to become the beloved "Voice" of Howard College Baseball. His commitment to the college's baseball program was immeasurable, touching the lives of countless students, coaches, and fans. His genuine admiration for the game and its players was evident in his live commentary, interviews, and unwavering support, making him an integral part of the Howard College Baseball legacy.

Furthermore, John Weeks' remarkable career as a college basketball referee is a testament to his exceptional abilities. Over a span of more than 46 years, he was an NJCAA Official and officiated games in prestigious conferences, including the Southwest conference (later known as the Big 12), the Big Sky, and the WAC. His dedication led him to be selected as a Dl Official for several Men's and Women's NCAA tournaments and games at the same time, including Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games. After John retired from officiating basketball, he was hired by the WJCAC Women's Basketball Conference as the Coordinator of Officials and also served as the Coordinator of Officials for the Women's Junior College National Basketball Tournament until his death in October 2022. His colleagues held him in the highest regard, recognizing him as a beacon of integrity and excellence both on and off the court.
